Wall Upholstery

Left Quotation MarkI would like to do something other than paint or a paint treatment on my powder room wall. Any suggestion? Right Quotation Mark

Have you considered using fabric and upholstering the wall? This can have such a impact and can make the space feel much warmer and more personal. You can use a solid color or a print, depending on the effect you are looking for. If you have the space, a print with a large repeat can create a space that is very interesting. Cotton is probably your best choice, but silk, if tightly woven and backed, can be very lovely.

The fabric is usually lighting padded and stapled to the wall and then finished on the edges with a welt, trim or nail heads. There will be seams depending on the width of the fabric, but these can be well placed and concealed by the finishing welt or trim. Seams are less noticeable if you choose a print rather than a plain fabric. Walls can be done in a solid panel, or done in channels or even in squares. The fabric can be scotch guarded to protect it against soiling.

We recently used silk on the walls of the foyer in this year’s ASID Designer’s Showcase House, for a very warm, sophisticated look. This treatment can be used in just about any room of the house. For example, walls can be upholstered behind a bed, and a complimentary fabric used for the bed cover. Also, if you have a window in the space, you can use the same fabric for the window treatment.
